Measuring human responses for biofeedback applications in media and VR

By Christoph Guger (g.tec) and Aleksander Valjamae (SPECS)

Abstract

This tutorial will demonstrate some technologies for recording user behavioral and physiological responses: eye-gaze tracking, respiration, electrodermal activity (EDA), electromiography (EMG), heartrate and electroencephalography (EEG). The two closely related research areas will demonstrate the use of such technologies: human responses to affective multisensory media and the biofeedback applications in media and VR. The first area is actively explored by SPECS in regard with new media applications for entertainment and neurorehabilitation. The area of biofeedback is also related to cybertherapy and neurorehabilitation (e.g. physiology driven music composition system developed by SPECS). A specific type of biofeedback based on EEG signals on-line analysis allows for Brain Computer Interfaces (BCI), where G.tec is a leading technology developer and provider.
